How to make an Ohio Star Block- Block#11 of 12- Video Quilt Along

We are down to block #11 and we are almost done with my video quilt along. So, if you haven’t been around before, then don’t forget to check out my video playlist for tutorials starting block 1.  Meanwhile, for block #11, I will show you how to make an Ohio Star Block. Here’s what you will be needing:

  • Lighter shade fabric: (2)    5.25” x 5.25”
  • Darker shade fabric: (2)    5.25” x 5.25”
  • Fabric squares: (5)            4.5” x 4.5”

How to make an Ohio Star Block:

Pair the 1 lighter shade fabric and 1 darker shade fabric. Lay one over the other with the pretty sides touching. Then, draw a diagonal line in the middle creating two half squares triangle and place a pin on both sides. Similarly, pair another of fabric. As a result, you have 4 half square triangles. Then, straight stitch on both sides of the diagonal line at about scant quarter inch. Then, remove the pins and cut the center line.

Open the triangles. By this time, you have 4 fabric squares with 2 color shades each. Repeat the previous steps at the beginning but this time match alternately the contrasting fabrics when you pair them. Also, instead of drawing the diagonal line in the same center line, draw another diagonal line perpendicular to the previous one. Do not forget to trim down the dog ears of each fabric square.

Trim down to size the fabric squares by 4.5” x 4.5”. All in all, you have 9 fabric squares measuring 4.5” x 4.5”. Place 1 fabric square in the middle. Then, position the 4 fabric squares with the triangles in such a way that it is creating a cross shape. Lastly, sew all units and rows, then sew all the rows together. However, remember to press the seam and push them towards the darker shade fabric.

The fabrics I used in this block are from Kaffe Fassett line for Westminster Fabrics and FreeSpirit Designer Essentials
