Must-Have Sewing Supplies for Beginners

must have beginnering sewing supplies by the crafty gemini video

Last week I shared my video review of the sewing machine I’m calling the 2016 best sewing machine for beginners. If you missed it be sure to check it out here.  {Hint: There is a giveaway involved and it ends this week!}  I wanted to follow that post up with an introductory overview of what I think are the must-have sewing supplies for any sewing newbie. The video is over 30 minutes long and it’s jam packed with sewing information. Even if you have been sewing for a while I think you may find it interesting.

I cover all the basic supplies you need to get started and also share with you some optional items and a few different variations on popular tools. I tried to keep the video content as budget friendly as possible. So, if you are on a tight budget but want to get started with sewing you will see that with a small investment you will be off and stitching in no time!

In sewing and quilting a lot of the tools and gadgets we use are a matter of personal preference. The only way to really know if a tool is for you is to actually try it. Unfortunately, that usually means you will be out some money if you buy something and you don’t really like it or end up using it. But it’s all part of the trial and error game. In this video you can expect to learn more about my favorites, what I use for certain applications and I try to give you the why of it all to help you make your own decisions as well.

If you are a beginner I hope you enjoy this video and if you are a seasoned sewist or quilter I hope you’ll share this post with a sewing newbie!

Now I’ll leave you with the video! Feel free to share with your friends on the different social media sites. And you can always pin my posts and videos as well. Happy sewing!

Here is the complete list of the items and products I mentioned in the video in the order in which they appear. Keep in mind you do not need all of these supplies to get started. This list features more options than what you really need but hopefully it will help you make your own decisions as to what to start off with.

I was surprised not to see the Juki F-600 that you did the review on but the straight stitch one and the newer DK-7. What’s wrong with the F-600? I’m curious because that’s the one I was considering. Are you going to do a review on the DK-7?

I sold it and upgraded for the added features of the DX-7. The F600 is amazing and yes I plan to do a review on this one too… when I get some time. They are pretty much identical machines except for a few added features- faster stitching speed, automatic presser foot lifter and you can program the heal on the foot pedal to do a variety of things and not just cutting the thread. Either would be a great choice but the F600 is obviously more affordable as well. Hope that helps. My son has an F300 and it is a dream to sew on too. It’s the base model of the F-series. Juki makes great machines and I have yet to be disappointed with any of them.

The bloopers are great – I haven’t missed a CG tutorial/video in years!! I am really digging the purple print fabric on your little ironing board you made – if you know the name of the line and can share that info I’d appreciate it – craft on pretty lady!!

Love the bloopers! I’ve been sewing for 30 years but watched the video anyway just to make sure I wasn’t missing any supplies. 🙂

Oh and I am in love with my Juki F600. I saw the DK-7 at our local sewing Expo and it’s great too. I agree, Juki is fantastic, and such a great value compared to other brands with similar features.

Thanks for all the great tutorials!

I am 60 years old and have been sewing since before you were born, but I enjoy your videos. I don’t have a sewing buddy near by and watch a lot of youtube videos to help keep motivated.

You mentioned the 60 mm rotary cutter…I really think you would not want to be without one if you tried it. I don’t know if anyone besides Olfa makes it, but I highly recommend trying it. One blade will last forever. As long as it is used on an Omni or Olfa mat. I have tried a couple of the white mats because I wanted their size, but too hard on blades in my opinion.

Anyway, just wanted to say you should try the 60 mm….

And to tell you you have a great teaching style.

Hi Vanessa, this is the only place I could let you know what’s happening. When I try to leave a comment on CGQC. I write my comment then press that button it’s not going through. Please help. Trying to get in on the July giveaway, and just talk with neighbors but it’s a no go
