Quilted Tote Bag Tutorial
I’m so excited to share this news with you today!
I have a quilted tote bag tutorial to share! This is a quick and satisfying project to make for yourself and to use as gifts for friends and family.
Many of you know that last month I flew to Hamilton, MO to film a few tutorials with the amazing Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company. Well, today is the day one of the tutorials goes LIVE!
Isn’t it cute?!
In this video tutorial I teach Jenny how to make my Improv Quilted Tote Bag. I had a great time working on this project with Jenny and we shared lots of laughs. You gotta watch this video! This is Part 1 of the Improv Tote tutorial after the video ends you will see a place to click to watch Part 2 of the tutorial (it will be up at midnight tonight). To make sure you don’t miss out on it go ahead and subscribe to the MSQC YouTube channel by clicking HERE. (And subscribe to the Crafty Gemini YouTube channel HERE.)

Another beautiful project and easy to follow tutorial! (Love Jenny’s channel too!). I am excited about this new product and going to definitely make one (a few 😉 ) of these. Smaller, quilt-as-you-go projects really fit in my busy schedule…thanks Vanessa & Jenny!

Just the best idea for next Christmas gifts. I better get started by June in order to complete my list. So much easier then ones I have attempted in the past. Five stars!

Two people I follow the most were in one place!

Thanks for sharing this with us! Some really amazing features.

Does it have to be double sided fusible in-r-form? I bough a few and need more. I can’t seem to find it anywhere! All sold out due to this amazing tutorial I am sure.
Marilyn
I watched the videos and loved them! You made me laugh out loud when you ripped the lining of the bag! It appears that you had a fantastic experience with Jenny! I made a tote using this great product and it turned out fantastic! I made it for my dog groomer. The fabrics were from the bandanna’s that she put on my pups! Thank you once again for a great, instructional video!
Mary
I tried this today using soft & stable I had on hand…. I thought I had watched the tutorial wrong but she out the first piece in the middle of one half of the foam… When you get to the end, you just have stripes… I guess I’m confused?
Laurene
Mary, I had chevrons on the front but strips on the back. I started with a square on the front, placed at an angle. Don’t know how it went wrong but it still looks OK. Did mine in green, Christmas fabrics.
Mary
Thanks Laurene… I don’t think it’s wrong :-); not sure how else it would turn out. I see a lot of pictures of the fronts of these totes but not the backs and wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something wrong!
Sue
**wonderful** tutorials, especially w/Jenny at the MQ. How great that 2 of thee best ouitlers are together making tutorials. Thanks & bring on more techniques using these methods!
Mary
I just received my in-r-form plus today…. so I know what I’ll be doing this weekend. I have just one question….. since this is double-sided fusible can you fuse the fabric to just one side? I can’t access the video at work and it just has me wondering if I missed something. Thanks!
Andrea
What a wonderful tutorial! Planning to snag some In-R-Form to make a few bags myself! 🙂
Cheryll
I had trouble with this. It started out easy but then I kept having raw edges so I don’t know what I did wrong
Vanessa Vargas Wilson
If you’re getting raw edges your seam allowance isn’t wide enough to catch both layers of fabric. Widen up the seam allowance and you should be fine.
Debbie
Could you please tell me if there is a written pattern for this bag. I am unable to watch videos due to a medical condition 🙁
Vanessa Vargas Wilson
The written pattern can be found in this digital issue of MODBlock magazine: https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/30145/msqc/msqc/digital-download-modblock-magazine-a-special-issue-by-msqc

I watched the tutorial on the Improv Tote and made 2. It was fun to make and I have enough In R Foam to make 2 more. I really enjoy watching Jenny and Vanessa and will continue to watch more.

I loved making this bag and have gotten so many compliments on it! I had to make my own strips (bc I’m too impatient to order a jelly roll, but I Loooove it!
Carolyn Baner
Love your improv bag (and so much of what you do!). I loved the additional straight line quilting and did that on the bag I made. I was careful to make my seam allowances the same for the quilted piece and the lining but the lining seemed to be a little big. Could this be because of the additional quilting? Getting ready to make another so thought I’d ask. Thanks for all you do and sure.
Katie
I recently saw the tutorial with the bag using the Mimosa line of Jelly Roll from Wyndham fabrics and I LOVE those colors, but I cannot find a jelly roll by that name with those colors. Has it been discontinued??? Hope not!
Linda
Both of you ladies rock!!!! I love this bag!!!! Keep up the videos, you explain everything completely and it’s fun to see you both working together! Jenny Doan is one of my top fav teacher and Vanessa, the more I see, the more I like. Thank you both!!!!
andrea
can you do a tutorial to make a bigger one for a diaper bag please? LOVE these!
Geraldine Schafer
This is such a great project and because these ladies worked together to explain how to do it, it was fabulous!
