Random fact: I’ve been crocheting since I was nine years old! I learned from an older Cuban lady who used to volunteer in my after school program. Once I had the basics down my mother later taught me how to crochet in the round and other fun stuff. Surprisingly enough I’ve never done a tutorial on anything crochet related. It’s probably because I don’t spend as much time crocheting as I do on sewing and quilting. I crochet here and there when I have some down time which is NOT very often. Lately, though, I’ve been working on a small crochet projects and have been really enjoying it again!
Now that my kids are a little older (almost 5 and almost 3) they can do their own thing while I sit in a rocking chair with my crochet project in hand. It’s amazing how much you can get done by spending just a few minutes on it here and there throughout the day. As crafters we all know that our hobbies and hands-on crafts keep us sane! Crochet is just another way for me to relax and I love that there is no need for fancy tools, a table to setup or even electricity.
Right before a storm came through and knocked our power out. Oh, Florida summers. |
Actually, that’s exactly what happened to me the other day. A huge storm came through and knocked all our power out for a few hours in the middle of the day. I calmly grabbed my crochet hook and yarn and sat in my rocking chair by a window while the kids played with their Lego blocks. It was a fabulous way to spend our afternoon!
If you don’t crochet and would like to learn I encourage to check out this video I created for you. It’s the first installment in a new video series I will be hosting on how to crochet. This video covers some real basic things like what supplies you need to get started, a few different project ideas for beginners and some suggestions based on my experience. The next video will be on some basic stitches you need to know to start your first project {it’s coming soon!} We will eventually get into actual projects so watch each video and practice! That’s really all it takes- enthusiasm and practice! Enjoy the video and happy hooking!
Do you crochet? If so, what do you love about it? If you don’t already crochet leave me a comment and let me know if this is something you’d like to learn with the help of my videos!
Here are just a couple of pictures from my Instagram feed of crocheted projects I’ve made this week for my daughter. You can see more by following me on Instagram.
She loves her mama-made crochet headband and flower! |
Allie picked out all the colors and embellishments. She named her “Minnie the Bird.” The pattern is from FreshStitches and can be found HERE. You can also learn how to make it in this Craftsy class. |
p.s.- If you just can’t wait to get started with crochet here are two Craftsy classes on crocheting that I personally recommend and will get you started crocheting today!
