Just in case you consider using grommets on your next project, here’s a video tutorial I made on how to install grommets. You usually see grommets on bags and tarps, so they can actually be functional or decorative. Grommets come in different sizes depending on the application you’re gonna be using it for. What I like about grommets is that you make the entire project and you install them at the end.
I have a Loraine Bucket Bag from my last year’s video bag of the month club which has grommets installed for the drawstring. Moreover, on my new bag of the month club, one of the projects that I will be teaching you is my Melissa Crossbody Clutch which can be worn in 3 ways and it has 2 grommets installed.
There are two ways you can install a grommet. You can install it by hand using a mallet or a hammer and some hand setting tools. Or you can use a massive grommet setting press. However, it is usually for mass production. So, if you are not going to install a lot of grommets, you can just actually use a hammer. When you buy a grommet setting kit, it comes with the hand tools you’re gonna be needing.
Meanwhile, I am going to use a fabric that has an outer fabric quilted to foam and a piece of lining fabric. Place your fabric over a piece of wood. Then, using the hand tool cut a hole in the fabric, wherever you need the grommet to be installed. Hit the hand tool with a hammer until a hole is made. Now, place the male end of the grommet on to the anvil. Slip the male end into the hole of the fabric. While on the other end of the fabric, place the female end. Hold down the setter into the hole of the female end, and hit it with a hammer.
Tip: You will know if the grommet is successfully installed if you can easily pull out the setter.

Why does my grommets come out like not attached or not properly sealed.

Sounds like you need to apply more pressure.
