Hand Embroidery- Video #5: Split Stitch

Hello! Welcome to another tutorial from my Hand Embroidery video series. By this time, you are now familiar with the running stitch and backstitch. We will now proceed to another kind of stitch that you can use during hand embroidery- the split stitch.

Initially, you go make your first stitch. Then for the second stitch, you will not start in front of the first stitch because that would be a running stitch. Instead, you will start stitching again from the middle of your first stitch. Then, you complete the second stitch past the ending of your first stitch. Just continue these steps then you are doing great with split stitching.

After your last stitch, secure your stitches by tying it off at the back. Insert the needle on one of the stitches but do not pull all the way. This will create a hoop of the thread. Then, insert the needle on the hoop and tug to tie the knot nice and tight.

By this time, you know how to do a running stitch, backstitch, and split stitch. These 3 kinds of hand embroidery stitches are used for outlining. And as you can see, the split stitch is the best choice for doing outlines. It looks like a continuous line instead of individual stitches, like a running stitch and backstitch.

I will leave you with this video tutorial where you can see how I do my split stitches.
