Welcome to block #9 of my Quilt along video tutorials. I call this the X Block. Here are the materials you will be needing:
- two contrasting fabrics
- fabric square 12″ x 12″
- fabric strips(2) 2″ x 20″
- rulers
- rotary cutter +mat
- pins
- sewing machine
- coordinating thread
- iron
Cut the fabric square, diagonally, in the middle. Then, place the fabric strip with the pretty side facing down over one triangle of the square. Position it in such a way that the left edge of the strip matches with the diagonal edge of the fabric. Also, take note that the strip should be longer than the fabric, so it should be longer on both sides. Then, stitch both fabrics with a scant seam allowance.
Flip open the fabric strip and iron press. Repeat the steps for the other half of the fabric square but attach it on the other side of the strip. As a result, you have one whole fabric again.
Cut again the fabric in the middle, perpendicular to the previous strip attached. Then, attach another strip by following the previous steps. As a result, an X design is going to be created through the fabric strips. However, take note that as you attach the second strip see to it that it is aligned at the intersection with the other strip. Or else, the X will seem to be somewhat off. Finally, cut the fabric into 12 ½ ” square quilt block.
Here’s my video tutorial on how to make an X Block. Enjoy!

I have another tutorial for you similar to cutting fabric sqaures into triangles. It is about quilting basics: half square triangle quilted coasters.
