I’m back with a new fun and easy project! There seems to be a lot of hype around small-ish organizer projects on the internet these days and I thought my little catch-all basket would be a great addition to the fun. Once you see how ridiculously easy it is to make you will make these by the dozens and have them on hand to give as gifts to just about anybody! I think what is appealing about organizer-type projects is how versatile they are! You can use them in your sewing space for marking pens, thread snips, wonder clips, etc. You can use it inside the house in the entrance way so you have a place to drop your phone and keys when you come in. My kids love to use them for sorting their outdoor treasures like feathers, rocks, sea shells, etc. There really is no limit to what you can use this little catch-all basket for!
Let’s go over the materials I used:
In this video tutorial I teach you how to make a catch-all fabric basket. Once you see how easy it is to sew these up you will be making them by the dozens to give as last minute gifts to your loved ones. Can be for kids, tweens, and adults! Customize by using fabrics that appeal to you or whoever you are giving it to!
Supplies used in this video:
• 1 piece of fabric at 10″ x 8″ for outer part of basket
• 1 piece of fabric at 10″ x 8″ for lining fabric
• 1 piece of Pellon Shape Flex (SF101) to stabilize lining fabric
• 1 piece of Pellon Flex Foam at 9″ x 7″ (you could use any non-fusible foam product as well.)
• piece of cardboard or post card that measures 4″ x 6″
• coordinating thread and basic sewing supplies
That’s it! Super basic, easy to make and a fabulous beginner project! Enjoy this fun, easy and functional project! Happy sewing and don’t forget to share this tutorial with your friends on social media! You can pin it it to Pinterest, too! We love pins!

Hi Vanessa,
I make this basket and put ribbon or use fabric I sew to make the bow ties on all 4 sides. I like this method better because it lays flat when I am not using it. Also the sides seem to hold up better with the ties on all ends. Next week I am using it on a cruise to put my room card and a few essentials in. When I have a dedicated place to put things I don’t loose them.
I especially like your binding tutorial. Thank you, Carole Lee

I have been making a similar basket for years. I make the corners so they are inside the basket and then stitch them flat to two sides. That way they are out of the way when used and they seem to add stability to the basket sides.

I have made several of these little baskets and really like them. I have a question about the other little basket shown in this tutorial, the one with the flaps. I watched your video and made a couple of these. I would like to make a small one as shown here but can’t figure out the correct measurements. Will you please post measurements for the small one. Thank you so much. I want to make these for Christmas gifts and fill with candy. Thank you so much. I love your videos and appreciate all the hard work that you do.

Hi Martha for the little one I used 5″ x 5″ squares and measured 2″ in on the corners. Hope that helps!

Great idea for home use but I’ve made these for years for travel. Instead of sewing the corners I used Velcro, that way they flattered out in my luggage. I usually place it on the night stand to hold my phone, room key, loose change, etc. Keeps things organized. My husband loves his, he places he wallet and phone there.

Thanks Vanessa! I love your small projects as I am one who needs immediate gratification! I have a young niece who wants to learn to sew and to help her I use this method:
1) I give her printed instructions to review
2) I let her watch the video to reinforce what she read
3) We shop from your shopping list (good bonding time)
4) She sews with excellent results!
Your tutorials are better than perfect for both of us, and she is more than encouraged with her accomplishments! I hope to be able to upload her work (as soon as she teaches me how. 🙂
Thank you

I have been making pencil pouches/boxed pouches and my daughter has been selling them at college. So often in the tutorials we are cutting zippers down to a smaller size. I have saved zippers for years (and buttons). Do you have a tutorial on how to add a zipper pull to the left over ends of the zippers? It seems a shame to throw away 7″-8″ pieces of zippers.
