I’m having so much fun making my clothes this year! I can’t wait to share with you all my different video tutorials, pattern reviews and even brand new Crafty Gemini Sewing Patterns (coming soon!)
As we kick off a new video tutorial series on sewing your own clothes I decided to begin with a video on how to take the three most basic measurements often needed when working with sewing patterns: bust, waist and hip. If you are new to sewing clothes there is a lot of information in this video that will be an eye opener for you. For example, the size on a pattern company’s envelope has no connection to the size you wear in store bought clothes. Yup. I said it. It is important to go by your actual body measurements when choosing the size pattern you will need. Although there are many other factors that can play a role in choosing the correct pattern size I have found most beginners do not know this and will often blindly choose their ready-to-wear size when working with sewing patterns. A big no-no. Watch the video for more details and info to help get you started.
My favorite measuring tape for easy and accurate measurements (without the need for a sewing buddy to help!) is this clip & slide measuring tape. This is a game changer. Watch the video to see how I use it.
You can purchase yours in our online shop right now.

p.s.- if you want to see all the clothes I’ve been making (and upcoming patterns & video tutorials) be sure to follow me on Facebook and Instagram. I post daily pictures & videos of my current projects.

I have sewn for years and have never seen how to do measurements. Very helpful. I used to make my own clothes but it was trial and error. Thanks so much

enjoyed sewing explanation of measurement.

Thank you so much. At last body measurements – how to take them and more important how to relate it to the pattern explained explicitly. Even though I’ve been making my clothes for a very long time I have always been less than pleased with the finished item because of the fit. Now…….its no longer a problem. I am so looking forward to the follow-up garment making videos. Its a most definite several ‘thumbs up’ from me. Brilliant.
