Day 11 of 12 Days of Last Minute DIY Gifts- FREE Video Tutorials- Bowl Cozy

soup bowl cozy tutorial crafty gemini

I have received hundreds of requests for a bowl cozy video tutorial this year. So, I thought it would only be fitting to include my bowl cozy video tutorial as a part of this 12 Days of Last Minute DIY Gifts video series! Ta-dah! Here it is. In this tutorial I teach you how to make the bowl cozies I prefer for the size and shape and the ones we most often use in our house both for hot and cold bowls. These are great for soups, oatmeal, yogurt and ice cream, etc. We also like to use them for our popcorn bowls when we have movie nights at home. Since all the bowls look the same the bowl cozies help us differentiate between bowls. Kids love having their own bowl cozy made up in fabrics they chose! I hope you like my take on the very popular soup bowl cozy. Enjoy!

Now, enjoy my FREE step-by-step video tutorial on how to make bowl cozies! Happy sewing!

Unfortunately, there just aren’t enough hours in the day for me to offer free video tutorials and PDF patterns. Video is my strong suit so I stick to that.

      Hi Vanessa,
I live inSouth Africa and finding it so hard to find the 100% cotton batting to make those lovely bowl cosy. I have made some but not with the cotton batting so they cannot be used in the microwave. Please advise where can I purchase the cotton batting. Many thanks

I would contact a local quilt shop in your area and see what cotton battings they carry. I don’t use a microwave so I’m afraid I don’t have personal experience info to offer you. Sorry!

This is a great tutorial! The best one I have seen yet! I watched her 3D pinwheel block tutorial and have enough blocks made for a twin sized quilt for my granddaughter! Working on the dashing now. It’s beautiful!

I really liked your tutorial on the bowl cozy, I know it says to use 100% cotton batting, however many of the batting say 100% does it matter which one I use, because now there is one that says it’s specifically for microwave? A bit more expensive. Just wonder what your thoughts are on this.
    Thank you

Hi Gwen! Glad you enjoyed my tutorial. I don’t use a microwave so I can’t speak to your question. Sorry I don’t have more info for you.

    Hi Vanessa!
Love your videos and the bowl cozy style (rounded corners)!
I’ve only been sewing (self-taught) for about 6 years and I’ve made a LOT of these and are by far, the most popular gifts I’ve ever given!!
One thing I will mention about the batting…I found out that I have to be very careful when buying 100% cotton batting, because not all of it is free of scrim (glues, etc…) and it will catch on fire in the microwave (ask me how I know that!!).
If in doubt, contact the company that makes the batting to make sure!
It’s worth the time and trouble to make a safe product.
I also make like to include a decorative gift tag that says how to safely use in the microwave (for 2 minute intervals and no longer than 6 minutes total time per heating). I also include laundering instructions.
Thank you for all your time and hard work on your videos!
I always look forward to seeing what fun project you come up with!

Hi Vanessa, thanks for your wonderful tutorial.
For all those wanting to know about the batting, it needs to be 100% cotton but making sure there’s no scrim in it. The best one out there made especially to use in the microwave is Wrap-N-Zap.
