While She Naps Podcast Interview

vanessa vargas wilson crafty gemini

I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on Abby’s While She Naps Podcast. I’ve been following Abby for a while now and am always so impressed with everything she does! If you’re a creative small business owner you need to subscribe to her newsletter and listen to her podcast! She is amazing and really helps shed light on a lot of the business side of things that many of us creatives dread. When she asked me to be a guest on her podcast I freaked! I’ve listened to so many of them and she always asks the best questions and really does her research on all her guests. I (of course!) jumped at the opportunity and am excited to share it with you now that it is live.

The chat is about an hour long and I basically give you my life story, how I got into this business, what I did before I focused on Crafty Gemini full-time, some details about our homeschooling and homesteading adventures, and a ton more. It’s quite an interesting conversation, I think. Listen to it while you do the dishes, put away laundry or while you’re working on your next project. I promise it is entertaining!

Hey Vanessa! I just spent the best hour EVER cleaning the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms in my house! Why? Because I carried you along from room to room on my iPad, listening to the chat you had going with Abby. I found it so enjoyable. I’ve been following you for a while (although not since 2009….I still have trouble threading my bobbins and must look up your first video on working with a sewing machine) and your husband is right when he said your followers love you. What a role model you are! Yea! Keep up the excellent videos, Vanessa. Oh…and those nasty negative comments that you get every once in a while…remember that for every 1 of those there are likely 100 positive ones that couldn’t get printed because most of us are super busy and didn’t find time to send them. Thank you! Thank you! Love you!

This was such a nice interview. I have watched and learned so much from Vanessa. I had a stroke and my mind doesn’t work so fast to follow many others. Vanessa shows you how to do everything in a way that simplifies all aspects of her projects. I still tell myself when making something “pretty sides together” and that really helps me.

You are a dream. I stumbled upon you about 5 years ago and find myself turning to your videos a lot. I don’t quilt, but when I start and I know I will, I will definitely look you up. Please don’t ever change. Thank you. Oh, make a fruitcake

What fun to hear this great interview. I’m not a big guy with tattoos but Vanessa taught ME to sew, too. 😀 I hope to see you in person at QuiltCon and I won’t stare but I’ll come up and say HI. I also wanted to say I used Cuisinaire rods in my 4 year old classroom and with my own children and they are awesome, once the kids are beyond choking hazard age. That’s also the benefit of good unit blocks that have mathematical relationships. Have fun with your adorable kids and very wise husband, to be so supportive and to know that DELETE is the best way to handle those terrible comments. Best of luck in the future and both of you (Abby and Vanessa) have a wonderful winter Holiday!!

Great interview. We have so much in common. I had the SAME experience in law school. Long story… I look forward to learning more in your quilting group. Blessings to you and your family.

As someone who enjoys sewing for pleasure and relaxation, I completely agree with Vanessa when she said that she would rather teach people to sew themselves instead of honoring their requests to make things FOR them. I agree to sew items for people on occasion; however, sewing “orders” take the pleasure out of sewing (for me). I am so glad that Vanessa did not allow the “trolls” to discourage her, because I LOVE all of her tutorials! The “N” word that I relate to Vanessa is “NOTABLE” – a prominent, important, or distinguished person! Vanessa is definitely in the nobility class of teachers. I sometimes teach beginning sewing classes, and I always tell my students to watch all of the Crafty Gemini classes available. I even tell them that there is really no longer the need to go into a classroom, since Vanessa is such a wonderful easy-to-understand teacher. I thoroughly enjoy teaching beginning sewing. I not only try to help people learn to sew; I also want them to LOVE to sew! Vanessa definitely has that gift!
