We have been super busy moving into the new farmhouse… well, maybe not “we.”  It’s been more like my DH moving everything by himself little by little.  Poor guy!  He gets to spend his four weeks of paternity leave moving his little family into our new place

I have been bonding with our new little girl.. isn’t she a doll?! Nursing is going as perfect as can be and last week at her two week checkup she was in the 85% for height and 88% for weight. Gotta give thanks for a healthy and thriving baby!

As my husband does the big heavy moving I decided to start on our first Fall Garden.  Up until now all I’ve ever done is grow in some containers earlier this summer.  So, this is my first take on an actual garden where I have a ton of space!  This is so exciting for all of us… 2 year old DS included.

We purchased an organic Fall garden kit from Comet Farm just a few miles up from where our place is.  The kit came with 32 plants of all kinds of yummies!– Cabbage, broccoli, kale, spinach, calendula, bok choy, etc.  We also got seed packets for things like peas, carrots, turnips, swiss chard, etc.

I came home and decided to try my hand at building some garden beds from cedar.

After building two I decided to try some free-standing raised bed rows… a lot easier, less strain on my back and they are free! My favorite part was I was able to mound them up with DD in tow.

I planted 64 white onions (from sets) across two of those beds today… and we’ll see what more I can get done tomorrow.

Are you starting a fall garden?

hi, congratulations on the new baby and moving. I live over on the east coast, and have my fall garden going too. beans are a big hit here at the house, and are going great. still have a few peppers and eggplant left over from the summer, and going to try some carrots and lettuce here soon. it always tastes so much better when you pick it absolutely fresh from right outside in your garden. enjoy!

This past summer I took a class through our city on Organic Community Gardens. I learned so much in that class and by reading more about what interested me. I brought all of the information home with me and appplied it to our small home garden. I made four 4’x4′ redwood raised bed gardens and mixed my own soil so that I knew exactly what was in it(no weeds). I started 2 compost piles, and even have 8 organic chickens (hens) just for the eggs. My 9 year old sells the extra eggs, 4 dozen per week. Our kids love the garden and the chickens. They now have a better understanding of where food comes from and have even gotten a little science project out of it. We canned pickles, tomatoes with garlic and basil, and made spiced peach preserves. I live in CA and it has been in the 90’s-100’s so I am not quite able to get started to plant my fall garden, since it is still summer here. I am also 33 weeks pregnant and am not as fast as I usually am. I have tons of pictures on my facebook and would love to share any info you might be interested in. Just let me know how I can help.

Wow, I am so impressed with you! I have tried to grow items in containers with no success. But I want to keep trying. I will follow you for ideas and inspiration. Good luck with it.

She is absolutely beautiful. Her shirt says it all. I can’t believe how much you are getting done with the baby in tow. You are just like the mom in “Little House on the Prairie.” Before we know it you’ll have livestock at your little farm.

Vanessa…She is adorable! I’m so happy for you and your family. Good luck with the garden. I kill everything I try to grow. Guess it’s a good thing I’m a quilter and not a gardener! :O)
